Lake Kepwari open to the public

Yancoal’s hard work in close consultation with local government and community has created Lake Kepwari. This 100 hectare aquatic attraction is a former open cut coal mine that operated for 50 years and will now be enjoyed by locals and tourists.

Rehabilitation of the area began in the 1980s with a final decision to turn the mine void into a 32 gigalitre lake approved in 2018. Lake Kepwari was officially opened to the public in December 2020.

Lake Kepwari is much more than a new waters ports tourist hub: it shows how the mining industry is committed to rehabilitating and relinquishing mined land for the benefit of the environment and the community. Long after its days as a productive coal mine are over havebeen left to memory, Lake Kepwari will be a landmark that contributes to Collie and its economy.
